    CSS DAVID Civil War torpedo boat memorial first day cover DCP postmarked at Pittsburgh, PA. on Aug 6, 2009. Color cachet with a period image of this famous vessel from the Charleston, SC area.

    This CSS David image was printed on cachet #2149 by Alvin Eckert, #9964, USCS.
    The 4 man, steam propelled, CSS David, was partially successful in attacking the blockade ship USS New Ironsides on Oct 5, 1863 outside Charleston Harbor. She was damaged in the attack but continued to attack Union blockade ships until April of 1864. Her hulk was located underwater in 1998.
