Description
USS FLYING FISH SS-229 memorial submarine cover honoring this Gato Classdiesel sub that was commissioned 10 December, 1941 at Portsmouth Navy Yard.
Offered is a submarine cover postmarked from Fort Lauderdale, FL dated Feb 9, 2018.

This fine vessel conducted twelve WW II Pacific patrols and earned 12 WW II Battle Stars. She returned to the US after the hostilities ended and was made flagship of the Atlantic Fleet's Submarine Force. She performed training cruises until 1951 when she was ordered to the Underwater Sound Laboratory where she was fitted with a large round conning tower. The tower contained captured German passive GHG sonar devices used for testing as possible future equipment for the USN. She set the record for USN submarine dives at 5,000!
She was decommissioned in 1954 and sold to be recycled for scrap metal in 1959.
Cover franked with a 50 cent Flag stamp (FDOI) and a 3 cent USN stamp from 1946 .
The cover was prepared on a un-gummed, archive quality envelope.
