    Description

    USS General Lyon: a Civil War captured steam gunboat naval first day cover postmarked at Orlando, FL on Aug 22, 1996. Blue photo of vessel printed on cachet #2143 by Alvin Eckert #9964 USCS.
    Cover franked with a 32 cent riverboat stamp # 3094 (FDOI) on a gummed quality envelope. Cover with a DIY matte and 5x7 frame, makes a fine gift!
    USS General Lyon: This 180' steam powered riverboat was built in Indiana in 1860 as
    De Soto
    and was obtained by the Confederacy in 1861 and armed with two guns. She was received by a Union forces on April 7, 1862 at the surrender of Island 10. She was later taken into USN service, renamed USS De Soto, later renamed USS General Lyon in Oct 1862, and served until 1865 when the war ended.
