Description
USS Washington BB-56 USN Battleship cover with a pictorial postmark on July 1, 2021 from Washington, DC. Blue printed photo cachet #2070 by Alvin Eckert #9964 USCS. Cover franked with a 25 cent Washington Statehood stamp # 2404 and a 55 cent flag stamp.This 728 foot NC Class battleship was built at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. She was launched on 1 June 1940 and commissioned on 15 May 1941. She had nine 16 inch guns, twenty five inch guns, fifteen 40mm anti-aircraft guns and 48 20mm anti-aircraft cannons. The ship carried three Vought OS-2U Kingfisher float-planes for recon and rescue operations. The proud vessel reported to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in July 1942, and started her three year battle with the enemy in the Pacific Theater, earning 13 WW II Battle Stars. She was operating primarily as an anti-aircraft platform escort for the carriers and a bombardment ship attacking close-in shore battles. She was laid up in 1947 and sold to be recycled into scrap metal in 1961.
